1963 Graduates from Reserve Officer School’s course number 111
1966 Graduates as Interior Architect from Leicester Polytechnic (Today: De Montfort University) in the UK. Minored in product design and photography. He is the only one in his graduating class to receive first-class honors
1967 Begins working in Marimekko, at first designing store interiors
1969 Moves to San Francisco and works for a year at MLTW Architects with Charles Moore and William Turnbull. Later that year, moves back to Finland, founds Decembre Oy and creates his famous Markiisilaukku line of canvas bags
1972 Creates Palaset modular storage cubes. Palaset and other products made out of plastic made Ratia an internationally recognized designer
1973 Palaset becomes Scandinavian Furniture of the Year. Ristomatti designs the first bed sheets for Marimekko in co-operation with Porin puuvilla Oy and Swedish KF
1974 Designs the interior of the Marimekko flagship store on Pohjoisesplanadi in Helsinki. Marimekko is listed in the stock exchange
1976 Moves to the USA and creates Marimekko licensing. Ristomatti’s stay in the USA from 1976 to 1983 can be characterized as one of the most influential in his life. Because of his achievements Marimekko’s Made in USA products become well-known throughout the North American continent
1977 Works as designer at Marimekko Inc.
1978 The Tommy Award bestowed on Marimekko bed sheets in 1978 and 1979
1979 Wallpapers awarded The Roscoe Award
1980 Designs first glassware: Marimekko by Iittala
1981 Wallpapers bestowed The Roscoe Award
1983 Resigns from Marimekko Inc.
1985 Moves back to Finland and sells his shares of Marimekko to Amer
1987 Works with Ergonomia Design and design studio Linja
1990 Moves to Chicago and founds Ratia Studio. Beginning of co-operation with Crate & Barrel Inc.
1992 Glass exhibition in the Finnish Glass Museum
1994 ”Chicago Goes to Milan” Exhibition in Chicago’s Atheneum. Creation of Saaristo product line
1995 Exhibition ”Boxes, Boxes, and More Boxes” in The Art Museum of Estonia
1998 Glass exhibition ”Esineiden koti”in Design Forum
1999 Founds Ratia Brand Co Oy as the home of RISTOMATTI RATIA brand. Has since designed numerous products for different partners. Ratia is also doing design work for Marimekko Oyj on an on-going basis.
2002 A book about Ristomatti Ratia called ”Paha poika” (”Bad Boy”) published.
2003 Glass exhibition in Galerie Forsblom
2005 RATIA & RATIA exhibition in Retretti
2010 Glass exhibition with glass blower Jaakko Liikanen in Gallery Putka, Savonlinna
